What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a treatment that has been utilized since the 1930s. It is an injection technique which we perform under ultrasound guidance to reach the targeted area of injury. Prolotherapy can be utilized to assist in the treatment of soft tissue injuries such as tendon or ligament issues or cartilage issues in the case of osteoarthritis. Our physicians utilize a dextrose solution which in turn will create a localized injury to the area, thus stimulating the body’s own healing response in an effort to try and strengthen and repair the injured tissue or joint.
Common conditions treated with Prolotherapy:
- Shoulder, neck, back, wrist, hip, hand, ankle, elbow and knee pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Sports injuries
- Unstable joints
- Chronic conditions
What to expect during my prolotherapy treatment?
Your physician will sterilely prep the area which is going to be injected. There will be some pain during the actual injection, but the procedure is usually well tolerated. After the procedure you will be instructed to avoid NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory medications) for 2 weeks. Your physician will coordinate a rehabilitation program to maximize the benefits from the procedure.
